Trade-off: The saddles accumulate debris and act as a dam, which can rust the roof sheets underneath.

Plastic mesh guard
Plastic mesh is cheap to install and widely sold, but it rarely eliminates maintenance. Fine debris still builds up beneath the mesh, and prolonged exposure to Perth’s sun can cause some products to become brittle and deteriorate over time.

Gutter guard can be an excellent investment in the right situation. Unfortunately, many homeowners are sold on the idea it’s a “fit and forget”solution.
After cleaning thousands of Perth gutters, we’ve seen what really happens over time.
Let’s dive a little deeper.
That's not even that bad!... right?
Looks Protected. Isn’t Protected.
At first glance, this gutter guard appears to be doing exactly what it was designed to do. From the ground, everything looks clean and unobstructed.
The reality was very different.
Years of fine roof grit, dust, leaf fragments and moisture had become trapped beneath the mesh, creating the perfect environment for moss to thrive. Instead of protecting the gutter, the guard concealed a growing problem that couldn’t be seen until it was removed.
In this case, the moss growth was so extensive that cleaning beneath the mesh was no longer practical. We removed and responsibly disposed of the gutter guard before thoroughly cleaning the gutter and restoring proper water flow.
This isn’t an isolated example. It’s something we regularly encounter across Perth, particularly on tiled roofs surrounded by trees. Gutter guard can reduce larger debris entering the gutter, but it still requires inspection and maintenance. Left unchecked, hidden build-up can retain moisture, restrict drainage and accelerate deterioration.

When Protection Causes Damage
Rust doesn’t usually start with a hole in the roof.
It starts with something much smaller.
A little trapped moisture. A worn protective coating. Fine roof grit caught beneath a saddle. Years of expansion and contraction rubbing away at the paint.
By the time rust becomes visible from the ground, the damage has often been developing for years.
Left untreated, what begins as a cosmetic blemish can become pitting, perforation and eventually a leaking roof. At that point, a simple maintenance issue can become a repair involving replacement roof sheets, insulation, ceilings and even internal water damage.
That’s why regular inspections matter.
The purpose of gutter guard should be to reduce maintenance—not hide problems until they’re expensive to repair.
So... Is mesh gutter guard the problem?
When Debris Has Nowhere to Go
One of the biggest misconceptions about DIY gutter screens is that they keep debris out of your gutters.
In reality, they often change where the debris collects.
Fine leaf litter, blossom, seeds and roof grit can pass through the perforations and settle inside the gutter. At the same time, larger debris builds up on top of the screen, where it remains in constant contact with the underside of the roof sheets.
That creates two separate maintenance problems.
Inside the gutter, organic matter retains moisture and can eventually restrict water flow. On top of the screen, trapped debris remains damp for extended periods, particularly through winter. Over time, this can accelerate the deterioration of protective roof coatings and contribute to corrosion of the roof sheet as well as the gutter.
A gutter guard should reduce maintenance—not create new areas where moisture and debris are hidden.
what about plastic mesh gutter guard?
Hidden Debris. Hidden Maintenance.
One of the biggest drawbacks of some plastic gutter guard systems isn’t what you can see—it’s what you can’t.
Over time, fine leaves, seeds, roof grit and decomposing organic matter work their way beneath the guard. Because the openings are small and access is limited, simply hosing the gutter from above rarely removes the build-up.
Instead, the debris continues to accumulate out of sight.
In many cases, the only effective solution is to remove & dispose of the gutter guard and then thoroughly clean the gutter. Reinstallation of the guard isn’t normally possible due to the damage during removal as this mesh becomes brittle and tears easily on removal. That turns what many homeowners expect to be a quick maintenance task into a far more time-consuming job.
If a gutter guard can’t be easily maintained, it may simply be hiding the problem rather than preventing it.
So… Is Gutter Guard Worth It?
The Honest Answer
There are properties where gutter guard genuinely makes sense.
If a home sits beneath heavy tree cover and the gutters are filling every few months, a quality gutter guard can reduce the amount of larger debris entering the gutter.
But here’s the part many sales brochures leave out…
It doesn’t stop maintenance.
It changes it.
Instead of simply cleaning an open gutter, you’re now maintaining both the gutter and the gutter guard. As you’ve seen throughout this page, debris can still accumulate, moisture can still be retained and hidden problems can still develop.
Our Professional Opinion
After cleaning thousands of gutters across Perth, we’ve made a conscious decision not to sell or install gutter guard.
Not because every system is bad.
Because we don’t believe it’s the right solution for most homes.
We’ve seen too many hidden blockages, rusted roof sheets, damaged gutters, brittle plastic guards and homeowners who were told they’d never need to clean their gutters again.
In our experience, there is no such thing as a maintenance-free gutter.
What We’d Recommend Instead
For most Perth homes, we’d rather see gutters professionally cleaned at appropriate intervals than covered with a system that can hide developing problems.
Open gutters are easy to inspect.
They’re easy to clean.
If something isn’t right, you’ll usually see it before it becomes an expensive repair.
Sometimes the simplest solution really is the best one.

Which gutter guard actually works best?
Mesh is the type with the clearest proven benefit. On metal roofs it's held with saddles; on tiled roofs it tucks under the tiles. One caution: saddles can accumulate debris and dam water, it's not uncommon to find rust the roof sheets beneath them during removal and disposal.
Does cleaning cost more once guards are installed?

Will lifting the guards myself void the warranty?
