KNOW YOUR GUARD

Not all gutter guards are equal

Four main types are sold as gutter guard Perth, and they’re not the same. Here’s what each actually does and the trade-offs.

we supply & install

Gutter Brush

A bristled insert that stops the bigger debris while letting fine material pass through. Easy to live with: during a clean we vacuum straight over and under it; if it’s bad we lift it, bang it out, refit and clean up. Available BAL-rated for bushfire zones.

Trade-off: fine litter still gets through, so the gutter underneath isn’t debris-free… But water still flows.

PROVEN PERFORMER

Aluminium Mesh Guard

The one type that’s shown a clear benefit. Secured to the gutter with a bracket, anchored onto metal roofs with saddles; on tiled roofs it’s installed under the tiles for a clean finish and good water flow.

Trade-off: The saddles accumulate debris and act as a dam, which can rust the roof sheets underneath.

Budget option

Plastic mesh guard

Plastic mesh is cheap to install and widely sold, but it rarely eliminates maintenance. Fine debris still builds up beneath the mesh, and prolonged exposure to Perth’s sun can cause some products to become brittle and deteriorate over time.

Trade-off: lower upfront cost, but limited lifespan and ongoing maintenance requirements.

Popular DIY option

Clip-on grate guard

Clip-on metal grate guards are heavily marketed as a premium DIY solution because they’re relatively inexpensive and easy to install. They clip into the front of the gutter and tuck beneath the roof sheet or first course of tiles.

Trade-off: Cleaning usually requires the guards to be partially or completely removed. This is slow, difficult and expensive compared with cleaning an open gutter.

THE HONEST LEDGER

Gutter Guard Pros and cons, no sales spin

Where guards earn it

  • Reduces how often debris blocks the gutter.
Fewer overflow events through Perth’s wet winter.
  • Reduces cleaning frequency.
If gutter cleaning is done multiple times a year, gutter guard reduces maintenance to once a year.
  • Protects the expensive stuff.
Fewer blockages means less roof leak, fascia rot and rusted guttering.
  • Vermin barrier.
If you’ve got a bird, rodent or insect problem, guards genuinely help shut the gutter off.
  • Ember protection.
Brush and mesh both come BAL-rated to help keep embers out of the roof cavity.

What the brochures skip

  • Still needs washing every year.
By you or a contractor. Guards reduce blockages, not maintenance.
  • Holds humidity in.
Guards keep gutters damp longer, so mould, moss and algae grow longer, acid concentration climbs, and the gutter deteriorates faster if it isn’t washed out annually.
  • Cleaning costs about 3× more.
Vacuuming over and under, or lifting and refitting, takes far longer than an open gutter.
  • Shaded homes are higher-risk.
More moss means the guard gets lifted more often — more chance of damage, and if anyone but the installer lifts it, the warranty is void.
  • Double-storey is dearer and riskier.
Guards restrict where fall-arrest gear can be fitted, pushing up the cost and danger of every clean.

Gutter Guard once
vs
Cleaning Forever

Setting your home up. Guards are a big one-off and each guarded wash costs about 3x a normal clean if a contractor does it, and they still need doing yearly. Toggle who does that wash and watch whether guards ever actually pay back.

Guards, one-off
$2,700
Cleaning now / year
$400
Break-even
15 yrs+

How it's modelled: open-gutter cleaning repeats at your chosen frequency. With guards you pay the one-off install, then one wash a year, at about 3x a standard clean if a contractor does it, or near-zero if you DIY. Ember/BAL mesh and tricky or double-storey access push the install rate toward the top of the slider. Planning estimates only; get trusted local quotes from reputable proffesionals.

bottom line

So - Is Gutter Guard Worth It?

Lean yes if…

  • Heavy gum litter makes every open-gutter clean more expensive than a gutter guard clean.
  • You’ve got a vermin problem you want shut out of the gutters and roof.
  • You’re in a bushfire (BAL) zone and want ember-rated brush or mesh.
  • You’ll DIY the annual wash, so the ongoing cost stays low.
  • You’re staying long enough to clear the break-even.

Lean no if…

  • You have few trees nearby and you only clean once a year or less.
  • Your roof is heavily shaded and moss-prone — expect more lifting, damage risk and warranty headaches.
  • You want a contractor to handle every wash — at 3× rate, guards rarely beat cleaning on cost alone.
  • Double-storey where guards make safety gear harder to install and you don’t want the extra costs.
  • You’re selling soon and won’t recoup the upfront spend.
Gutter guard perth FAQ

Straight answers

Do gutter guards still need cleaning?

Yes. Gutter guards cut down how often debris blocks the gutter, but they must be washed out at least once a year. Because guards hold humidity in, mould, moss and algae grow longer and raise acid levels, skipping the annual wash actually speeds up gutter deterioration.

Are brush gutter guards any good?

YES!!! Brush guards stop the larger debris while letting fine material and water past, and they're easy to service. Brushes only need to be installed over the downpipes. We vacuum straight over and under them, or lift, bang out and refit if needed and because of this, a house with brushes installed is invoiced at the standard rate. They also come BAL-rated for bushfire zones, which makes them a practical, low-fuss option. We also offer supply and install of brushes if requested.

Which gutter guard actually works best?

Mesh is the type with the clearest proven benefit. On metal roofs it's held with saddles; on tiled roofs it tucks under the tiles. One caution: saddles can accumulate debris and dam water, it's not uncommon to find rust the roof sheets beneath them during removal and disposal.

Does cleaning cost more once guards are installed?

Yes, roughly 3x a standard clean. Working over, under or around a guard, and sometimes lifting and refitting it, takes far longer than clearing an open gutter. Some gutters CANNOT BE CLEANED with some types of gutter guard installed

Will lifting the guards myself void the warranty?

Usually yes. If anyone other than the installer lifts the guard, the warranty is typically void. Shaded, moss-prone homes get lifted more often, which raises both damage and warranty risk.

Is gutter guard worth it in Perth?

On cleaning cost alone, often not. Each guarded wash costs about 3x and they still need annual washing. They're worth it when protection matters: vermin, bushfire ember risk, or a high-risk double-storey. Run the calculator above for your own numbers.

Do gutter guards help in bushfire (BAL) zones?

Brush and mesh both come BAL/ember-rated to help keep embers out of the roof cavity. Separately, keep foam downpipe blockers on hand so you can plug the downpipes and fill the gutters with water if fire threatens.
